Heavy Machinery – Should You Rent Or Buy?

There are many hardcore DIY men out there. They enjoy the tackling the task of improving their home or garden themselves. What could be better than your own personal touch when creating something you will have to live with for a long, long time? Of course, there are many construction, landscaping and building companies out there. Many of them claim to have good deals, and to be affordable whilst maintaining efficiency and quality.

Whether you are a DIY advocate or someone who just wants to make a few changes to your home, there are some things to consider. You will need to realistically assess whether it will actually be cheaper to go with a construction company, or to simply do the work yourself. Of course, the labor costs of a hired company will not be nearly as expensive as the cost of the machinery they use. If you have decided you want to save money on labor costs, or even if you simply wish to do the labor yourself, there is the heavy machinery to consider.

There are many companies that hire out heavy machinery and power tools. Some plant hire companies are very strict on whom they lend their equipment out to. If you have never operated a bulldozer or jackhammer before, you may need some training. Perhaps if this is the case, it is better to hire someone to do the work for you. Your lack of experience could result in a less than satisfactory DIY project.

Another thought to consider is whether it is more worth your while to hire the machinery or buy it. If your project is major, and is going to take a long time, you may save money by purchasing the heavy machinery. Once your project is completed, you can resell the machinery and obtain some return on your original purchase. If you are one of those hardcore DIYers, then perhaps purchasing the machinery you need will also be a good investment. They will be used over and over, and the cost of going through an equipment hire company may just not be worth it.

If this is going to be a one time project, and you firmly believe you are equipped to handle and operate the heavy machinery, then hiring is probably the best choice for you.
